Firmly convinced of the power of a smile, Gustav Ehrenreich created the cheerful Hoptimist movement in the late 1960s. The aim was to design a figurine that would constantly remind people of the importance of staying positive and optimistic. Because, although the 1960s are often called “the happy 60s”, the decade was marked by some disturbing events. Therefore, the joy that Ehrenreich’s design spread was welcome in a rather turbulent time. Bimble and Bumble were the very first Hoptimists that the designer created: A girl in a dress with smiling eyes and an attentive boy with a stick on his head. Today, the cheerful Hoptimists are part of Danish design history and bring joy all over the world.
